Issues in Toyota Electronics?

Recent recalls by Toyota have attracted a lot of attention.  An article that I co-authored with another electrical engineer on this topic can be found at http://www.ece.cmu.edu/~raj/toyota.html.    We review some design choices that Toyota seems to have made in its electronic throttle control system called ETCS-I.   We also suggest the possibility that voltage spikes from unprotected relays in these systems could over time damage the electronics.

In the very least, given the safety implications, the possibility is worth studying closely.
